Contrary to what many people believe, it’s not a bad thing to give up being a leader.

There are many situations wherein a leader may find himself or herself needing to put more time and effort in other aspects of the business. You shouldn’t feel miserable if the time comes when you’ve got to let another person run the organization. It’s important that you accept the fact that the leadership role may not be a good fit to you. Not succeeding as a leader doesn’t mean you can’t excel in other roles.

You find it hard to focus on your job as a leader.

A very clear sign that you’re not perfect for your role is when you finally realize that you barely have time for it. We all need to understand how time consuming a leadership role is. Being a leader doesn’t mean having all the time in the world. As a leader, you are required to observe the behaviour of everyone around you. It’s your job to know how your people are performing, who does well and who doesn’t, and who needs direction.

You can’t handle the stress.

When you have to lead other people, you will be using a lot of your physical and mental energy. This is very stressful and not everyone can handle it. Take note that there’s a kind of stress that can kill you. If you feel that your job as a manager or leader is what’s causing you to feel stressed out every single day, it’s clear that you should look for other things to do.

You know there’s another better option.

You may be good at what you do, but it doesn’t mean nobody else can do it as good as you. When you’ve learned to accept it and acknowledge that someone in your team has the right leadership skills to run the organization, then you must swallow your pride and do what’s best for the team. You should recognize when it is time to be an adviser rather that a leader.

You don’t have the skills needed to succeed in your position.

Whether you like it or not, the difficulty you are facing in leading the organization could be because of the fact that you don’t have what it takes to be a good leader. While it’s true that there are ways you can develop good leadership skills, like by working with an executive coach, you may still find yourself at the end of the road. It would hurt to admit that you can’t overcome your deficits, but it is what it is, and you just have to do what’s right for the organization.
