What Does It Take To Get Above the Crowds?

I’m walking along our suburban street, in too-new walking boots, my back aching from my pack that I’ve stuffed with discs from the home gym. The sun went down a while ago (roll on the Summer Solstice), and the steady monotonous motion of putting one foot in front of the other is strangely comforting. It’s getting easier, but I’m still a newbie.

I’ve set myself a new challenge - wild camping. I want to be back out in the great outdoors. But the real great outdoors.

I’m not interested in ambling along the paths packed full of holiday hikers. You know I need a challenge, and I want to feel as close to nature as possible, imagine myself away from the hustle and bustle and stress of everyday modern life.

Just me, the trees, and my cold weather sleeping bag.

But what does it take to get up there, above the crowds of people trying to wade through the mud and noise?

It takes preparation.

Researching the gear.

Buying the gear.

Practising walking with weights in my weather-proof pack so I don’t wind myself when I’m out there.

Making sure I can fit my tent and all the supplies I need into my pack without throwing it all into a ravine in a fury.

Plotting my route carefully, allowing myself extra time.

It takes listening to the experts.

Take a quick look at my Amazon algorithm (hi Jeff!), and you’ll be immediately led to a long list of survival tomes.

How to Suffer Outside by Diana Helmuth & How to Survive Your First Trip in the Wild: Backpacking for Beginners by Paul Magnati

Why?

Because these guys know what they’re talking about.

They’ve been to the places I’m going, they’ve made mistakes that I can learn from, they know the tricks to keeping warm and keeping your socks dry, and making sure you don’t fall into a hole and twist your ankle.

I get to benefit from their experience, and make my first trips smoother and more enjoyable. I get to learn the tricks of the trade, the things that will set me apart from couples taking a gentle weekend stroll.

This is how you can set yourself apart from the crowds.

Do these two things, and you’re not competing for space on well-trodden paths - you’re up there in the fresh air and quiet, far above it all. With space to wander, smelling new smells, hearing new sounds, learning more about who you are.

Come on, tell me you’re not dreaming of pine forests right now?
