Many of us are waiting for that miracle, you know, the big one—the one that will confirm our belief in something larger than ourselves. Yet, we are surrounded by things that actually are pretty miraculous; some even defying the common laws of science as we know them. One of those things is water. I can even go out on a limb and say that this remarkable substance known as water has many of the characteristics that some would equate to God-like. Although, I don’t take it that far, I believe this characterization is an interesting philosophical consideration. That said, here are 13 properties of water that are quite divine.
1. Water is the most abundant substance on earth – covering 70% of planet
That’s why the chances of a satellite plummeting into land is low.
2. Humans are composed of 60 – 70% water
Yes, that’s right. Most medical calculations and dosing is based on this fact.
3. Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid
Just look at the Grand Canyon. Over time, water can dissolve great mountains, shorelines, even metal
4. The earth is a closed system, similar to a terrarium, meaning that it rarely loses or gains extra matter. The same water that existed on the earth millions of years ago is still present today
That’s right, the water you are drinking today is the same as that sipped by Dino the Dinosaur or a caveman near you!
5. A person can live about a month without food, but only about a week without water
Water is the most vital solution for life—the function of all our vital organs.
6. Water is the only substance that is found naturally on earth in three forms: liquid, gas, solid
There are a few other substances that can occur in these states, but none exist naturally, at the same time, right now, on earth. They must be manipulated in some way. Not water.
7. Water has an extremely high dielectric strength compared to other liquids
This gives water the ability that other liquids don’t possess, to dissolve compounds. Dielectric strength is the ability of a material to withstand an electric field without breaking down.
8. Water also has the ability to pass through cell membranes and climb great heights in plants and trees through osmosis and capillary force
Osmotic pressure and capillary action enable water to climb hundreds of feet to the tops of the highest trees. Through osmosis, marine creatures can absorb fresh water in an increasing salt-water environment. And then, the increase in cell pressure causes the osmosis to reverse itself and preserve the life of the creature. The same mysterious action takes place on a micro-scale within the bodies of all living beings.
9. Sound travels through sea water about 4.5 times as fast as it travels through air
The speed of sound in dry air at 20 °C, is 1,236 km/hr (768 mph); in water, 5342 km/hr (3320 mph).
10. Light sends electromagnetic waves through water, causing many crystalline patterns and photosynthesis
Passing water through a magnetic field reorients water hardness, eliminating scaling in pipes and cooking utensils. Thoughts change the crystalline patterns of water that sends electronic waves through human and animal bodies. Good thoughts may produce good results like health and happiness and bad thoughts produce bad results, such as poor health. The majority of this work was done by Masaru Emoto. Although some have questioned the science behind his work, no one has been able to disprove it either.
11. Water holds a deep significance in some religious scripture
Christianity requires immersion in water, through Baptism, to become one with God. From the Creation story in Genesis, to Noah and the great flood, to the parting of the Red Sea, to Jonah and the whale—the great power of water is indisputable.
12. All life arose from water, billions of years ago
No matter what theory about the beginnings of life here on earth, they all have one element in common—water. From the Creation story to the Primordial Soup theory, water is present prior to life.
13. Our lives begin in water
In the womb, amniotic water serves to protect the fetus. In many ways, a fetus arises from the water onto the earth, symbolic of billions of years of evolution.
