Dear Employee,


Not a biggie but you’ve been coming in late with some frequency and don’t worry, it’s not a huge deal but I felt the need to say something just because, you know, sometimes as the boss you have to, so that everyone feels fairness in the workplace. And if there’s anything personal going on that I can help with let me know. You’re doing a great job, just want to keep all the cogs in the engine rolling and so–

Why your plan will surely backfire

I think Tina Fey has a great point. Crying terrifies people, especially at work. We all lose it from time to time. That’s just part of being human. What you want to avoid is being known for crying. Once that happens, people are reluctant to tell you things or give you responsibility because they fear your response. It can break down communication and alienate you. In fact, it can stunt your growth and you may not even know it.

Try not to cry so much. Ha. Obviously easier said than done. Bottom line, crying happens when you feel overwhelmed with emotion. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from the situation to get some perspective on what is overwhelming you. Stepping away is okay and stepping away can save face. Sometimes we all need some distance and space to figure it out.
