9 Tips to Weed Out Distractions from Very Successful Marketers

Written by: Beth Smedinghoff

As marketers, we have a lot on our plates.

Meetings, emails, and the expectation that we know every new tip, trick, tool, and trend in the industry. Oh yeah, and then actually have to do our jobs and bust out some mind-blowing marketing. Frankly, it can be a bit overwhelming.

Before you have a mini-panic attack at your desk, take a deep breath. We think we can help. Below are a few of our favorite tips on how to weed out distractions and actually do marketing from marketers who know how to get. sh*t. done.

1. ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS

“Before you ever create content, ask yourself, ‘who will help amplify this, and why?’ If you don’t have a great, specific answer to that question, reconsider whether you should create it at all. Content that doesn’t earn links, shares, email forwards, word-of-mouth, press, etc. probably won’t stand out, won’t rank, and won’t be worth your energy to build.” – Rand Fiskin (via Forbes.com)

2. DON’T FORGET WHY YOU’RE DOING IT

“Remember, more content does not mean more assets.  The asset is the audience, and the content is what gets you to the asset.” – Joe Pulizzi (via Content Marketing Institute)

3. TELL YOUR INNER PERFECTIONIST TO CHILL

“Don’t let perfection get in the way of done. Sometimes committing before we are fully ready will push us enough out of our comfort zone to actually get it done.” –  Brittany Hagan (via her Torchlite blog post)

4. MAKE YOUR MARKETING NECESSARY

“Instead of creating an ad campaign that somehow cuts and invades, consider creating a product, a service and a story that we’d miss if we couldn’t find it.” – Seth Godin (via Seth’s Blog)

5. GET THE RIGHT THINGS DONE

“An Agile approach enables you to become more effective without working more. You may get more done – or you may not. The point is that you’re more likely to get the right things done.” – Andrea Fryrear (via Content Marketing Institute)

6. GIVE (MORE THAN) A LITTLE BIT

“Effective marketers aren’t afraid to give away their best stuff because knowing how to drive a car doesn’t mean you’ll win a race even if you start with the fastest car.” – Eric Tsai (via Design Damage)

7. FIND YOUR WINNING FORMULA

“[Coca Cola’s] equation for winning stories is quite simple. Quality content + coordinated + current.” Doug Busk (via ClickZ)

8. GO SLOW TO GROW FAST

“We need to identify those key moments when we need to slow down, because doing so allows the business to grow faster. (And better. And with more integrity.)” – Ann Handley via MarketingProfs)

9. FIND YOUR VOICE

“I think it’s most important to be as authentic as possible. If you’re not authentic, your followers and your fans will see right through it.” – Erik Jensen (via Effie Worldwide)
