An Ominous Signal in Pennsylvania

JOE BIDEN AND DONALD TRUMP easily won their respective primaries on Tuesday night, but that wasn’t the big story. The election showed — once again — that voters aren’t happy with the candidates and want a better choice.

MORE THAN 150,000 PEOPLE CAST THEIR VOTES FOR NIKKI HALEY in Pennsylvania, where Trump lost to President Biden by 80,000 votes in 2020. What stands out to us is Trump’s showing in the Philadelphia suburbs — four vote-rich counties where turnout is crucial to win the state. In three of the four counties, nearly 25 percent of Republican voters cast ballots for Haley over Trump.

SIMON RESENBERG, a Democratic strategist, told the Washington Post that he thinks there are a sizable number of GOP voters who have shifted away from the Republican Party since the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, posing a problem for the GOP.

“The opposition to Trump is far more significant than any reticence against Biden,” said Rosenberg. Other political analysts believe Trump has been hurt by his trials in New York, where he emerges daily snarling and critical of the legal system.

AND OTHER analysts see another big problem for Biden: the growing protests on college campuses is a negative for the president.

WE THINK THIS ELECTION WILL BE A TALE OF MOMENTUM — and in recent weeks Trump’s numbers have slipped. The race is either tied or slightly leaning toward Biden. This could change within weeks if inflation persists; gasoline prices are surging.

WE REMAIN PUZZLED BY TRUMP’S SCATHING attacks on Nikki Haley after she dropped out of the race. She could have brought tens of thousands of votes to the GOP ticket, but Trump shunned her and her followers — a tactical error that could become crucial by November.
